From Old Speedwell Families: Peter Beeler was born probably in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia on 16 Sep 1767. He was the son of John and Mary Beeler. The Beeler family settled on Beaver Creek in what is now Sullivan Co., Tennessee sometime before April, 1780 when John Beeler was first granted land there by NC. The Beelers were most probably of German or Swiss origin and came into Virginia from Pennsylvania. Peter Beeler died near Speedwell, Claiborne Co TN on 17 Aug 1836 and was buried in the Beeler Cemetery just west of Speedwell. A neighbor on Beaver Creek was Adam Petre whose daughter Barbara, Peter Beeler married about 1794. Her mother`s name was Catherine. Barbara Beeler died at Speedwell in June 1828 and is buried beside her husband. Peter Beeler was taxed in Sullivan Co in 1796. He moved to Grainger Co, Tennessee about 1797 as he is not found on the tax list of Sullivan Co for that year. His father is first mentioned in the court records of Grainger Co in Feb and Peter in May 1798. In that month Peter Beeler recorded his ear-mark for livestock and obtained permission from the court to build a grist mill at his residence on Williams Creek. Peter Beeler and his mill are mentioned frequently in the court records of Grainger Co. He served as a juror several times and was taxed for several hundred acres in the years 1799-1813. His holdings ranged from 385 1/2 to 640 acres. He and his family were enumerated in Grainger Co. in the 1810 census. Peter Beeler built a mill on Davis Creek near Speedwell, Claiborne Co TN sometime before Oct 1810, but remained in residence on Williams Creek until about 1814. In Feb 1814 he was a resident of Grainger Co, but his name is missing from the 1816 tax list. The last time he is mentioned in the Grainger Co court records is in Aug 1814, as he sold land to Joseph Beeler. In four transactions from Oct 1810 until Sep 1818, he bought 610 acres on Davis Creek in Claiborne Co. Peter Beeler is found in the 1830 census of Claiborne Co. In March 1833 he sold his farms to his three youngest sons jointly. His will was presented in court on 3 Oct 1836 and proved by William Kincaid. William Bowman and Adam Beeler were bonded as executors. A sale was held in early Nov. The estate was settled in March 1841.
